Raise your hand if you can relate to this:

Most of my mornings include laying in bed an extra 5 minutes, having an inner battle between snoozing my alarm the third time, or getting out of bed. Lately, the snooze button has been winning, and in my defeat, I’ve been spending mindless minutes struggling to kickstart my day.

There are a lot of conversations on how creating a morning routine can help you have a better day. And I agree. What you feed your mind and body first thing in the morning will be carried into the rest of the day.

However, creating a routine is about having enough flexibility to figure out what works best for you with the life you have now. What are the top things that help you feel your best in the morning?

Here are my four tips that could work with your busy schedule:

  • Try to stay away from your phone within the first hour. Use this time to check in with yourself. How are you feeling? What anxieties can you calm? Are things from yesterday still bothering you today? Take a couple of deep breaths.

  • Let the first piece of content you consume for the day be something slow and meaningful. A book, some writing, a song. Quick content doesn’t allow us to ease into our day and can create anxiety and overstimulation.

  • Spend a few moments moving. Maybe a quick walk, stretch, or dance. Warm up your joints and get all the energy and fluid moving in your body. This is especially important if your job requires you to sit for long periods.

  • Try to eat fresh and nutritious foods for breakfast. Processed and sugary foods tend to make us crash at midday, so try to avoid them when you can.
